Hey Mike,
I flew over the trail about 5 days ago. There was still some significant snow on the ridge but it is melting nicely. Arnica lake was mostly frozen, but Burman lake was bare. The SE Couloir is filled with snow still. I'm going to try to get back there on the 27th. Post what you find.

The weather has stopped the trip for this weekend so you may get there before me. Please post what you find if the weather is better for you! Thanks

Didn't go to the Hinde, went instead to climb the sceptre on Victoria. We tried the WR 500 approach and after 4.5 hours of bushwacking in the rain we decided it wasn't gonna go. Note to those who follow, the WR 500 approach is a really bad idea, go for the South Ridge hike and drop down onto the west side for the climb instead. Still lots of snow on the mountain.

Christian have you climbed the scepter before? Do you know if it has been climbed in the winter?

Hey John,
That was my first time going to the Sceptre. I was trying to get there last March for a winter climb, but the weather was never any good when I had time off. I talked to Phil Stone about winter routes on the Mountain and apparently the Sceptre hasn't yet seen a winter ascent. From what he told me though, there were about 4 strong parties looking to get the first full winter ascent of the mountain last year (06/07), but they were more concerned with the completion of the North Face, so maybe things have changed.

No, the SAR guy is Mark Salesse. I would say that the route is probably in way better shape this week than before. I've seen a whole lot of melt in the last while (if the Elk River is any indication). Good luck on it. Wish it was me (I'm off to Ontario for 6 weeks). We'll have to talk some more about a go at it in the winter, if you're still interested?

Yeah, that's me. The last couple of years haven't been too bad for Island ice conditions, but I do try to get over to the Rockies for a couple of weeks a year (doesn't always work out though). Did you have a go at a winter ascent of Directissima on the Colonel last year? With the crappy weather all I got in on the island was some lower grade short stuff on Arrowsmith and a really nice day on the Newman-Foweraker route. We'll have to get together when I get back and see what's happeneing this winter for sure.
